![]() ![]() Joshua Ferguson and David Curlee frequently made public record requests in the course of covering city government for a local blog, Friends for Fullerton’s Future. The city of Fullerton, California, has agreed to pay $350,000 to settle a lawsuit it brought against two bloggers it accused of hacking the city’s Dropbox account. Log out of your account and test the link.Geographer / Wikimedia Commons reader comments 99 with Don't worry, it's because you are logged into your account. ![]() Shared links are also read only.Īlso note that if you try to test this while logged into your account in a browser, you'll be directed to your account, which may confuse you. It is really very safe (unless, I suppose, you have a document in the link that has your dropbox password in it, or you put everything in one folder and share a link to it). Parent folders, files that aren't in the folder, basically all the other contents of your dropbox are not visible or accessible through that link (sub folders of folders shared in links ARE accessible). ![]() Only files that are available in the shared link are visible to the users with the link. ![]() There are also some bandwidth restrictions about total downloads. Unless you password protect the link, anyone that has the link has access to those files, until you kill the link (or set it to expire in a certain length of time). To take an extreme example would sharing a link to a file or folder on say a very dubious and tech savvy user based public site (like 4chan) be an unwise or perfectly safe thing to do?Ĭouple things. I'm slightly concerned that these links may somehow allow access to other areas of my dropbox folders / reveal other information about my account that could open up my account to being hacked and generally comprise my security. What concerns me is I like to share links to particular folders and files with friends and family, and possibly even the open internet in general. If they do I should be notified by email anyway. I feel happy enough knowing that no one is really going to 'hack' into my account and access my files. However, because it holds all my so very personal and intimate files I'm concerned around security. I basically store everything on it from my computer content (for backup purposes) to selectively sharing across all my devices (and partitions), to just uploading large amounts of data for storage. ![]()
